President Buhari Finally Writes Senate Over Herdsmen Killings In Benue State (See Details)

President Muhammadu Buhari says it is not true that he has done nothing to resolve the crisis between Fulani herdsmen and farmers in Benue State.

This is contained in Buhari’s letter to the Senate.

Senate President, Bukola Saraki read it to his collegeaues on Wednesday.

The President was quoted as saying the police, on his directive, is working “strenuously” to apprehend those behind the killings in Benue State.

The letter reads,“I thank you for your letter referenced NASS/8S/R/01/33 dated 18th January 2018 and carefully studied the resolutions and comments there in. As I briefed you and the RT. Hon speaker when we met, several courses of action have been taken prior to the senate resolution.

“You may recall that I told you of the following steps taken as soon as the information came in to me about the Benue killings. One, on Thursday 4th January, I sent the minister of interior and the deputy inspector-general of police in charge of operations for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation.

“Two, on Friday 5th January, the inspector-general of police briefed me verbally on the latest situation, calm had then been restored.

“Three, on Monday 8th, the minister of interior met with the following, governors of Adamawa, Kaduna, Niger, Benue Taraba and Nasarawa together with the DG of the State Security Services, inspector-general of police, CG civil defence, minister of agriculture and rural development and police commissioner of the six aforementioned states.

“After the meeting instructed the minister of interior to brief you on the information gathered so far and steps taken. On Tuesday, 9th of January, at a session with governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state during which in informed of police arrests of some suspects. In addition, I told him that have instructed to speed up trial of the suspects and give wide publicity of the police efforts.

“At the instance of the governor, a meeting was held in the presidential villa on 15th with a wide cross-section of Benue personalities and frank and open discussions were held. Everybody appreciated the difficulties of this farmers-herders strife. I assured all of my commitment and assured justice would be done.

“To infer therefore that nothing has been done, is incorrect. The police are strenuously working to apprehend the rest of the culprits of these heartless killings.

“Furthermore, I have instructed the IGP to relocate to Benue state and redeploy forces to the most sensitive towns. The federal government is initiating measures to address these and other security challenges, alleviate the consequence of these attacks and forestall reoccurrence.

“On December 19 to be precise, while receiving the report of the committee that was set up to review the technical and administrative structure of the NIA, I underscored the need review the entire national security architecture as I promised in my inaugural address on the 29th May 2015, action is being initiated to receive maximum cooperation from the senate in line with paragraph three of the senate resolutions.”

Ooops! Oil Marketers Sentenced To 8 Years In Prison (Read)

Justice Latifat Okunnu of the State High Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, has convicted and sentenced three oil marketers – Adamu Maula, George Ogbonna and Emmanuel Morah on a 26-count amended charge of conspiracy, obtaining by false pretence and forgery to the tune of N789.6million.

The charges were preferred against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Maula and his co-convicts were prosecuted alongside their firms, Downstream Energy Sources Limited and Rocky Energy Limited.

The convicts was said to have imported 10, 862 metric tonnes of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, for which they were paid the sum of money by the Petroleum Support Fund, PSF.

However, EFCC, investigation revealed that the documents used were forged.

Counsels to the defendants, in a separate no-case submissions, had urged the court to dismiss the charge against their clients for lack of merit.

However, in the course of the trial, the prosecution counsel, Rotimi Jacobs, SAN, presented 11 witnesses, including Abdulrasheed Bawa, an investigator with the EFCC, and tendered documents in evidence.

In his judgment on January 26, Justice Okunnu sentenced the defendants to eight years imprisonment each.

The judge also ordered the convicts to return the money they fraudulently collected to the Federal Government.

Their companies were, however, discharged and acquitted by the court.

Petrol Crisis May Worsen As Depot Price Hits N165 Per Litre

Despite what seems like the best efforts of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to end the protracted petrol scarcity in the country, the fuel supply situation may worsen as the price has hit N165 per litre at the depots, against the official price of N133.28.

According to ThisDay investigation, this is coming as two petrol vessels imported by the NNPC discharged simultaneously in Lagos at the weekend.

Petrol scarcity, which had marred the Christmas and New Year celebrations, has persisted despite the efforts of the NNPC to successfully perform the onerous task of meeting the country’s fuel need, following the refusal of the private marketers to import on account of unsustainability of the official pricing regime.

A market survey conducted by ThisDay showed that only seven out of over 30 depots had stock of petrol at the weekend.

The depots include Folawiyo, Fatgbems, Aiteo, Bovas, Heyden, Rainoil/First Royal and NIPCO.
However, the major marketers had stock of NNPC’s petrol, which the corporation was dispensing to only the major marketers’ dealers and their branded filling stations at official price.

It was gathered that the petrol in these depots belong to the NNPC under throughput arrangement with these depot owners.

Worried that the petrol it imported and allocated to marketers did not get to retail outlets and motorists at official price, the NNPC had since stopped allocating product to marketers and resorted to throughput arrangement with selected marketing firms to have effective control of supply and distribution.

However, to address the challenges, two vessels imported by the NNPC discharged simultaneously in Apapa at the weekend.

Manchester City have made a late move to sign Leicester City winger, Riyad Mahrez, after Pep Guardiola revealed Leroy Sane will be out for up to seven weeks with his ankle injury.

Sane will be out until March, ruling him out of the Carabao Cup final against Arsenal.

Leicester boss, Claude Puel, has insisted Mahrez is not for sale, but City look set to test their resolve with a late bid.

Sane was crocked by Cardiff City’s Joe Bennett in Sunday’s FA Cup win and Guardiola disagreed with Neil Warnock shrugging off the challenge, saying that is English football.

“Well, he is more experienced by far about English football, he knows English football better than me.

“If he says that, what can I say?

“I was here 18 months and I don’t think English football is like this. My feeling is that English football is not like this.

“But again Neil has more experience than me. He has spent all his career in England and that is why his opinions are his opinions,” Guardiola said.
